THOSE WHO ARE SAYING KASHMIR IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF INDIA ARE WRONG

KULDEEP NAYAR

Farooq Abdullah has said in an article in a well-produced Urdu journal from Srinagar that his late father, Sheikh Abdullah, would have been happy to know that the Kashmir youth were picking up the gun for their rights. This is nothing but a figment of Farooq’s imagination. Even the Pakistan Foreign Minister, Zulfikhar Ali Bhutto, had a similar approach. He did send infiltrators into Kashmir in the hope that the Kashmiris would rise against India and join him to demand accession to Pakistan. He turned out to be wrong. The Kashmiris, sufi by nature, were against fanaticism and the criteria of religion, that is Islam, to decide accession. The Pakistani infiltrators were detected by the Kashmiris themselves and handed over to the Indian army. I knew Sheikh Saheb fairly well. He was the first person to come to my hotel as soon as I informed his office about my presence in Srinagar after my three-month detention during the emergency. I remember his words: Ab tum bhi Haji ho javoge (You have also become a Haji), meaning thereby a jail pilgrim. The Sheikh was referring to my detention at the Tihar jail because I had written strongly against Indira Gandhi’s authoritarian rule. This reminded Sheikh Sahib of the detention by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu. He was so close to Nehru that he would stay at his house whenever he came to Delhi. Even after the detention, he stayed with him because Nehru admitted his mistake and apologized. Those who are saying all the time that Kashmir is an integral part of India are wrong in the sense that the state of Jammu and Kashmir enjoys autonomy as enunciated in Article 370 which says that except the three subjects—foreign affairs, defence and communications—the other articles of the constitution that gave powers to the Central Government would be applied to Jammu and Kashmir only with the concurrence of the state’s constituent assembly. In other words, because of these constitutional provisions, the State of Jammu & Kashmir enjoyed the type of autonomy which other states don’t have. Subsequently, the Sheikh Saheb had the state constituent assembly pass a resolution that the state of Jammu and Kashmir had acceded to India irrevocably. Before doing so, he sent Sadiq Sahib, who became the state chief minister later, to Pakistan to assess what kind of polity Islamabad was going to pursue. After hearing Sadiq’s view on the policy which Rawalpindi wanted to follow, the Sheikh Saheb, a product of national struggle to obtain independence from the maharaja and the British, took no time in joining India because his heart was for a pluralistic state. A democratic India, where there would be religious freedom, was the obvious choice for him because Pakistan was wallowing in Islam at that time. With the passage of time, the Sheikh became the only liberal voice which could be heard clearly in the midst of Hindu and Muslim challenges and counter-challenges. I recall when I was released from the Tihar Jail my co-prisoners asked me to visit Srinagar and request the Sheikh to speak against the emergency because he was respected all over the country. When I met him at Srinagar, the Sheikh saw the point and issued a statement, criticizing the emergency in unequivocal language. Indira Gandhi traced the statement to my equation with the Sheikh. But what mattered was boosting the morale of those detained during the emergency. The entire nation had fallen silent and was afraid to speak out at that time. It had lost the sensibility to differentiate between the wrong and the right, moral and immoral. Whenever he spoke, entire India listened to him because his statements transcended the state boundary. In the process, he translated the real sentiments of people. So much so that even political parties in the opposition lapped up whatever he said because he kept India above the state’s interests because he had the aura of a tall leader who did not get into pettiness of politics. Farooq Abdullah has tried to dwarf the Sheikh’s stature by restricting him to Kashmir. He would have admonished New Delhi for creating such conditions in the state that the Kashmirs were forced to pick up the guns because New Delhi failed to make good the promise: the centre will have only three subjects, defence, foreign affairs and communications, and the rest will be in the domain of the state. Farooq Abdullah’s earlier statement was constructive. He said that India should recognize the line of control as the international border and allow Islamabad to integrate the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK) which is at present under the Pakistani army. In fact, Farooq has hit the hail on is head because both countries have clashed with each other often on the violation of the LoC. Whatever their strategies or aspirations, the two sides should face the fact: Both India and Pakistan have fought two wars in trying to resolve the border issue on their own. They cannot afford to have another war, particularly when both have nuclear weapons. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has done well in allaying the fears of India on the Pathankot incident. He has asked for more details because probably he found the leads that have been provided by India are not adequate. He has done well in also detaining Masood Azhar who was also behind the Mumbai attacks. It is a healthy development that the meeting of foreign secretaries was rescheduled and not cancelled altogether as was feared after the Pathankot attack. New Delhi also seems to appreciate the pressure under which Nawaz Sharif is functioning because the last word is still with the army. The Pakistan army chief’s importance can be seen from the fact that Nawaz Sharif carried him to Iran and Saudi Arabia for mediation between them. I feel sad to see Nawaz Sharif giving an equal protocol to the army chief in every meeting that he attends. The tragedy in a third world country is that once the armed forces become a part of the government, they do not go back to the barracks.

FIVE GREAT FAST BOWLERS NOT UTILIZED FOR PAKISTAN

Ever since its inception, Pakistan cricket is known for producing some of the best fast bowlers the game has ever seen. Among Wasim’s magical deliveries, Waqar’s toe crushing Yorkers and Shoaib’s searing pace, there were certain individuals who were equally competent however, they were never quite utilized to their potential, due to injuries, selection issues and other controversies that came in their way. So join us today as we take a look at some of the fast bowlers who weren’t utilized by Pakistan.

1.MUHAMMAD ZAHID
Hailed as one of the fastest bowlers in the world, Mohammed Zahid is one individual that every longtime Pakistan cricket fan will remember fondly. The man who took eleven wickets on his debut against New Zealand was expected to lead the Pakistani fast bowling attack for the next generation. Unfortunately, what could have been a success story turned out to be just a dream as, very early in his career, Zahid picked up a serious back injury. After his back surgery he became a shell of his former self and was eventually dropped from the team. In an interview, Shoaib Akhtar admitted that Mohammad Zahid was yards quicker than him when he was bowling in 1997. Had Zahid’s work load been managed properly he could have easily been the next in line on the long list of great fast bowlers that Pakistan has produced.

2.SHABIR AHMED
The joint-fastest Pakistani bowler to 50 Test wickets (with Waqar Younis in 10 Tests), Shabbir Ahmed was far from a conventional Pakistani fast bowler. Standing at 6 feet tall, he had the ability to extract a lot of bounce even on a placid wicket. On top of the bounce he was also very accurate and had the ability to generate decent pace. Despite, these gifts however, he was reported for an illegal bowling action and was subsequently banned for one year after the ensuing investigation. In the meantime he was upstaged by other younger fast bowlers thus; even after his return, he could never regain his spot in the team. At the end of the day all the fast bowlers mentioned in this list were extremely talented and if they had been used properly they could have lifted Pakistan to new heights. Which of the mentioned fast bowler is your favorite? Leave your opinion in the comments below plus, also mention some of the fast bowlers that you feel were wasted by Pakistan.

3. MUHAMMAD SAMI
Named the modern day Malcolm Marshall by the former Pakistan captain Imran khan, Mohammed Sami is another fast bowler who in his heyday constantly made it to the list of the fastest bowlers in the world. Sami has always been known for his ability to generate serious pace however, despite being among the fastest bowlers in the world his talent was never quite utilized by Pakistan. He was often dropped from the team after just one bad performance and a lot of times he wasn’t recalled despite consistently taking wickets at the domestic level. While many fans claim that Mohammed Sami is a run leaker, his record of 121 wickets in 87 ODI’s at an average of 29 and an economy rate of 4.99, suggests otherwise. Add to the fact that he has also got a test and an ODI hat-trick to his name and, it becomes pretty clear that Pakistan cricket team has failed to use his skills. His omission from the squad in the England tour also means that it is very unlikely that he will ever make his return to the team despite delivering decent performances in the Asia cup and the World T20.

4. TANVEER AHMED
With over 500 first class wickets to his name along with a debut 6 wicket haul against South Africa, Tanvir Ahmed is another capable fast bowler who never quite established himself in the team due to selection inconsistencies. He first rose to prominence at the domestic circuit during the 2009-2010 season in which he picked up 85 wickets at an average of just 17. He was immediately selected after that for the test series against South Africa and since then has played a total of only 5 matches in which he has picked up 17 wickets. These days he can be seen on TV channels shouting uselessly while analyzing the current state of Pakistan cricket and one begins to wonder whether his loud mouth is the reason why his true talent of fast bowling was wasted.

5. MUHAMMAD ASIF
Mohammed Asif has been widely considered the best new ball bowler that Pakistan has ever produced however; he is also more prone to controversy than any other cricketer in the country. He has been tested positive for steroids twice and he was also caught with a recreational drug at the Dubai airport once. Perhaps the biggest controversy that tarnished Asif’s career was the spot fixing scandal, which resulted in a one year prison sentence and a 5 year ban from the game. All these controversies simply meant that Asif could never quite live up to his potential. While many fans will argue that Asif is himself responsible for wasting his talent, it is important to note that it is the responsibility of PCB to properly council players and protect them from bookies in order to make sure that bookies don’t have access to them. Most of the Pakistani cricketers are uneducated and come from small backgrounds thus, for them these offers are tempting. While Mohammed Asif is responsible for not avoiding controversy, the PCB and the team management is equally responsible for not counseling the players. At the end of the day whoever you consider responsible, it is pretty clear that all these controversies resulted in the loss of a great fast bowler. While Asif’s ban has been lifted and he has shown that he is still a very capable fast bowler, it is very unlikely that he will ever make a return.
